How to Deal with Prostate
Enlargement
If you have gone to a doctor for prostate exams and you have
been told that you have prostate enlargement, there are some
things that you should keep in mind. First of all, even thought
this sounds like it could be something very serious, it might
not be. So, the first thing that you should do is take a deep
breath and calm down.
Your doctor is going to do a lot of tests, because prostate
enlargement is something that can be an indicator of something
serious, like cancer. So, you should go along with whatever
tests your doctor says are necessary to make sure that you are
healthy. This is something that you should always be sure to
do. If your doctor says he wants to do some tests, let him do
it! If your prostate enlargement is a sign of cancer, the
sooner you know for sure the sooner you can start treating
it.
However, this only happens rarely. Actually, quite often
prostate enlargement is a sign of something else. It might be
something that you can help, and it might be something that you
need to work on. It also might be just a sign of getting older,
and might be nothing to worry about.
Consult Your Physician
The bottom line is that your doctor will know where to go from
there on out if you actually have prostate enlargement. He will
probably order a prostate test to see if you have cancer or
not. Obviously if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, there
are treatments to take and a certain course of action that you
should follow. If the cancer tests are negative, then it is
going to take more tests to actually figure out what is wrong
with you. Be patient, because there are many things that you
can do.
Often, prostate enlargement has something to do with you being
in poor health. Either you aren’t eating the right foods, or
you aren’t getting the right kind of exercise. This is
naturally going to happen as you get older, so the natural
prostate enlargement might be even made worse by a lack of
exercise or a poor diet. Your doctor will recommend things that
you can do to make sure that you are living as healthy of a
life as possible. Don’t worry too much about it, because there
is always a treatment method that you can do.
Prostate Specific Antigen Test – The Best Diagnostic Test
for Prostate Cancer
Just as the PAP test is a must every for every woman over 30,
the PSA test for prostate cancer is a must for every man over
40. Let us see what this test looks at and how this can help
you stay healthy. The PSA test measures the protease, which is
basically a protein secreted by the prostate gland. If the
levels of PSA in the blood are high, this is an indicator of
prostate cancer and benign prostate hyperplasia. Hence, this is
a very important test. Early discovery of cancer can have it
totally cured giving you years of qualitative years ahead.
There are possibilities when the prostate specific antigen test
will show a very low presence in the blood. In this case, the
PSA test will be boosted by another test, i.e. the monoclonal
antibody technique. Through this method, all the PSA present in
the blood (separate and joined with other substances) can be
measured. The total PSA is the sum total of both these tests.
The result should not exceed 4.5 ng/ml; if it does, then a
biopsy would need to be made in order to rule out the
possibility of cancer.
Other Possibilities
The prostate specific antigen is hence, used for dual purposes,
i.e. (i) diagnostic - specifically showing cancer, and (ii) to
show/check how well it responds to treatment.
There are other prostate diseases that the elevated prostate
specific antigen in the blood could be indicating. These would
be prostates, which is an infection of this gland and prostatic
hypertorhy (enlargement of the prostate) which grows directly
proportionate in risk with every year that passes over 40 years
of age. The good news is that in most of the medical facilities
the prostate specific antigen test offer is free of cost.
You should be very careful when you take a prostate specific
antigen test, because the amount of this protein in the blood
will be likely to be influenced by any drugs you are consuming
herbal or otherwise. In case you are undertaking treatment –
herbal, homeopathy or any other alternative medicine, you will
need to tell the doctor clearly what was it, for how long you
have been taking it, and for what purpose because there are
many such treatments, which can create havoc in the reading of
the PSA Test.
As inaccurate reading could mean that though you just started
prostate cancer, the results will come out negative. Hence, the
prostate specific antigen test should be carried out only when
you are sure that nothing would interfere with the reading.
